Austrade, the Australian Government's principal trade and investment promotion agency – sits at the  centre of Australian businesses and their connection to the region.
Reporting to the Austrade Deputy CEO and leading circa 80 staff across mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the General Manager drives commercial outcomes for Australian business while representing Australia's interests in a demanding bilateral environment.

This is a role for an executive who is an exceptional people leader, understands how China works in 2026 - politically, commercially, and culturally - and has the credibility and confidence to give advice when it matters.
We are looking for a highly commercial leader with current China market expertise, genuine relevant networks, and a track record of building high-performing, engaged teams in complex, geographically dispersed environments.
You will be financially literate and an excellent communicator who builds trust and forms productive relationships with ease. You’ll be required to participate in a pre-posting placement in Australia for six months to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements. The assignment will be for a fixed term of no longer than five years.

Demonstrating an understanding of Government policy is valued and Mandarin language proficiency is an asset. Australian citizenship and eligibility for NV2 security clearance are required.

Austrade may use the outcomes of this process to fill other positions across our agency as required.
